Mrs. Harkey has been married to her husband, Ryan, for 24 years. They have four children ages 20, 18, 16 and 14. Their youngest three children live with them on the Oregon coast. Their oldest child attends a small private Christian college in Ohio.
Mrs. Harkey has been homeschooling her own four students and other students in a Classical method for over 13 years. She spent time instructing high schoolers for four years using the Socratic model of teaching. Although she facilitated many subjects, her favorite is language: grammar, writing and instruction. After teaching her Latin students a conversational Spanish course she decided to seek a venue in which to share her passion. She now has been teaching Spanish with True North Homeschool Academy for three years. Her classes include: Conversational Spanish, Spanish A, Spanish B and Spanish 1. Because of her love of word-smithing she also teaches Writing Skills using Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW)— a program she taught her own students for six years. She is currently pursuing her “Registered Instructor” certification with the company.
Professional Degrees & Experience
Mrs. Harkey earned a Bachelor of Arts in Hispanic Studies from Wheaton College, Norton, MA. Before staying home to homeschool her children Mrs. Harkey worked as for an internet consulting firm in Houston, Texas. She and her husband served with Athletes in Action, a ministry of CRU, for eight years where she worked part time in Human Resources and as a Grant
My son is in True North Academy Spanish for Children class. It has been such a positive experience and a blessing for our family. He has learned so much and thoroughly enjoyed the classes. I love that the classes are live and everyone can see each other. This is especially important for language study. We will definitely be taking more courses from True North Academy.
