Karyn Perrine

About Karyn

Karyn Perrine lives with her husband and son in southeast Michigan.  She is extremely passionate about sharing with others the importance of knowing and understanding the significance of the past.  Both she and her husband enjoy reading and discussing philosophy and its application in both the education sphere and our moral lives.  You will always find her with a book on hand, either on history, classical education, or philosophy.

Her family also enjoys both the visual and performing arts.  Her husband Dr. William Perrine instructs the wind band at Concordia University Ann Arbor and is a published author on music education.  They love to travel and when given the opportunity Karyn enjoys attending overseas conferences with her husband.  Her favorite, although only three days, was in Athens and Thessaly.

When not teaching or schooling, Karyn can be found reading or gardening.  She loves being outside and enjoying nature.  As a family they enjoy playing with their English Shepherd puppy who loves to join them on weekly nature hikes.  They attend a local church and both Karyn and her husband help teach the high school Sunday School class.

 Homeschool Experience

Karyn began homeschooling the year of 2020.  She has since taught history and writing courses in a local hybrid program and co-op.  Even with her background of public and private school teaching, she is enjoying having the ability to meet the needs of her son in a homeschool environment.  She enjoys being able to dive deep into subjects, take nature walks for science lessons, and be more active in social circles.

 Professional Degrees & Experience

Both Karyn and her husband have been educators in some capacity over the past 20 years.  Since 2004, she has worked in both private and public elementary and high schools and has taught several college history courses as well.  Prior to homeschooling, she most recently worked at a public charter school where she taught middle and high school history classes as well as moral philosophy.  Even though her teaching certification allows her to teach a variety of social studies courses, her true love is in the ancient and medieval world. She loves reading and learning about the influence that philosophy has in culture and how much we can learn about ourselves by studying the ideas of the past.

Student/Parent Endorsements

“In the two years that she was my children’s teacher, she displayed unusually high integrity, morality, and ethics.  Not only did she display them, but she taught them through her history and knowledge. She grades her students’ work with careful consideration and aims to truly give them the grade they earned and will work with them to help them understand their academic struggles.

Her knowledge base on these subjects is next to none.  She truly is a gifted and wonderful teacher.”

I have had the honor of working with Lisa Nehring over the course of many years, both as a colleague and as an instructor for my middle school child.  She is well versed in the teaching of literature, composition, and writing to a variety of ages. Lisa clearly states objectives and offers realistic goals to her students.  As a parent and home educator, she offered suggestions and guidance that were attainable and gave me the confidence to guide my child towards success. Lisa has years of experience and insight into a variety of educational strategies and programs.  As a fellow educator and homeschooling parent, her expertise and encouragement are top-notch.  We have had multiple opportunities to collaborate and for me (and my child) to benefit from her wisdom. Any student or parent who has the opportunity to work with Lisa will benefit and be equipped to move forward in their educational journey.
