Writer’s Workshop – Advanced Creative Writing Class
The Writer’s Workshop class is perfect for budding writers who have dreams of writing the great American novel or advanced writers who need to hone their creative writing skills. Children who are constantly coming up with story ideas or need a place to share their poetry or song lyrics will thrive in this course. The teacher works with students to improve their writing style in a fun and energizing atmosphere and will work with students to personalize each class and their credits.
Independent Creative Writing
Due to the focus on independent goals and projects, the class is geared for students in grades 6 and up.
Writer’s Workshop members will set their own yearly and monthly writing goals with the teacher. These will vary based on their individualized writing goals -from writing novels and poetry to winning contests, finding an editor to publish them, or starting a blog. We provide regular accountability and support.
This class includes weekly writing prompts, a place to read and assess writing with constructive feedback, writing challenges, weekly skill-building, group readings, and helpful and positive critiques! Students will participate in break-out rooms which add to the camaraderie as we work together to write. Students will also have access to information on current contests and writing opportunities.
Creative writing and skill-building may include but is not limited to:
- Poetry Forms and Meter
- Sketch Comedy Writing
- Figures of Speech and Tropes
- Lyrical Writing
- Literary Analysis
- Presentation Skills
- Book Themes, Characters, and Plot
Each week students interact and share their book recommendations. We will practice literary analysis together, students will learn about developing major themes, characters, and plot. Books are rated and we create booklists which are fun and eclectic due to the ages and variety of interests of our students. We publish our Creative Writing Recommended Booklist each semester.
Class Structure & Required Materials
The Writer’s Workshop is structured a little differently than other True North Homeschool Academy courses. Because of its focus on guiding each student’s writing experiences, it meets twice a month on the first and third Fridays of each month throughout the school year.
Materials needed will vary based on the student’s chosen projects.
Writer’s Workshop can be a supplement and tie-in to other English courses, for the child who wants to hone their writing and creative skills, for those considering a writing career or for those who want an extra credit in English.
