Knitting & Crocheting will bring you a new take on two time-honored handicrafts that will bring your students hours of enjoyment, provide a practical life skill while they develop manual dexterity and critical thinking skills. Multiple students and/or a parent may attend this class.
Families can learn together – there is not an additional cost for multiple attendees for this course.
First, while learning to crochet, we will begin with the most basic of all techniques:
- Chain stitch
- Treble crochets
Again, we will work to see how these basic stitches can be altered to create different projects. Students will again be encouraged to pick out a pattern to make. Supplies will include a crochet hook or hooks and yarn needed for their projects.
The first class will consist of a discussion of different types of yarns and threads that can be used when knitting and crocheting and the pros and cons of each.
During the remaining classes, we will be learning basic knitting stitches including:
- Casting on
- Casting off
We will then see how these basic techniques are used to create anything from a plain scarf to a fancy sweater. Students will need knitting needles and yarn appropriate for the project they choose.
The needle arts are calming, relaxing, uses repetitive, rhythmic movements, which can help prevent and manage stress, and boost the body’s immune system. They are also useful, providing a practical life skill.
Required Materials: knitting needles, crochet hooks, yarn
