The Literature of Jane Austen

This is a one-semester survey course. It will focus on the six novels of the author, Jane Austen, and will build skills in literary analysis and discussion. Class time will consist of discussions of themes, culture, and characters. Homework includes reading the novels, posting on the class discussion stream, and participating in simple projects. Grading is based on class discussion, stream discussion, and end of semester (simple) project presentation.

Required Texts

  • Pride & Prejudice
  • Emma
  • Northanger Abbey
  • Mansfield Park
  • Sense & Sensibility
  • Persuasion

Any non-abridged edition will do.

Annotated means it’s the full text with extra notes – those editions are usually very helpful. Abridged means that some text has been cut out to create a shorter edition. Please purchase only full text, un-abridged editions for this class.

Texts that will be referenced in class and are not required:

  • A Jane Austen Devotional by Steffany Woolsey
  • Miniatures and Morals: the Christian novels of Jane Austen by Peter J. Leithart
  • The Jane Austen Annotated Editions by Belknap Press (May be purchased new/used on amazon)
