Description

Literature through Film II is a fun and engaging look at literature! Grab your bucket of popcorn and get ready for an adventure of a class! Have you ever found out your favorite book was made into a movie only to be disappointed by the adaption? Or have you ever had the opposite happen and discovered you loved a movie and did not really like the book? Films and books are both great ways to tell a story. In this class, students will wind through a series of books and their movie counterparts. In Literature through Film II students will compare books with their movie counterparts, students will learn what makes a great story (& maybe what does not) character development, and the other elements that make for great storytelling in both mediums.

Literature through Film II is a fun and engaging look at literature! Grab your bucket of popcorn and get ready for an adventure of a class!

In Literature through Film II students will study literary elements and think about larger themes in novels (available in audiobook) and how movie adaptations can teach a different message than the original.  Stand-alone movies, short stories, and plays will also be explored.   For the two required reading novels, links to optional audiobooks will be sent to students in the fall.

Students are expected to watch the required version for each movie for this class, read/listen to two novels, and be ready to discuss/share their written answers to the guide which has been supplied. Literary works include:

  • The Ransom of Red Chief  (in public domain; free print and audio versions available)
  • Rocky
  • Henry V (in public domain; free audio versions available)
  • Little Women (in public domain; free audio versions available) [Watched AND Read]
  • To Kill a Mockingbird
  • Pride and Prejudice  (in public domain; free audio versions available) [Watched AND Read]
  • Chariots of Fire
  • 12 Angry Men
  • Hidden Figures

Assessment of grades will be based on participation in class, a mixture of quizzes, shorter written responses, and one large essay each semester. Special attention will be given in class coaching students to have good thesis statements and developing their arguments with evidential support.

The class will be taught and graded by your True North Homeschool Academy teacher.
