Literature through Film

Literature through Film is a fun and engaging look at Literature! Grab your bucket of popcorn and get ready for an adventure of a class! This full-year course will focus on stories and novels that have been magically turned into film. From old fairy tales to modern middle-grade novels, we will study everything from the lives of authors and movie directors to the elements of story in its various presentations.

In Literature through Film, we will spend two weeks (two classes) on each story. Class time will be devoted to guided conversation on the story as it was told in the book versus the movie, rereading and analyzing certain passages and quotes from the book, and watching and analyzing important clips from the movie. We will learn how to analyze storytelling in its respective forms and share our own individual insights on both book and film.

Families will be responsible for accessing each book and film and reading and watching them outside of class time. The majority of books (and many films) should be available at your local library. As for the films, a Disney Plus subscription will be very helpful, however, other older films will be free to watch in full on YouTube or to rent on Amazon Prime.

Examples of stories we will study (not a complete list):

  • Aladdin (from Arabian Nights) & 1992 Disney’s Aladdin
  • The Little Mermaid (Hans Christian Andersen) & 1989 Disney’s The Little Mermaid
  • The Sleeping Beauty (Brothers Grimm) & 1959 Disney’s Sleeping Beauty
  • Pollyanna (Eleanor H. Porter) & 1960 Disney’s Pollyanna
  • Holes (Louis Sachar) & 2003 Disney’s Holes

This is going to be a fun and engaging class. Perfect for Middle School or early High School student who struggle with reading.
