Description

The book of Revelation looms large in the minds of many American Christians. To many, the book seems like a science-fiction novel. The vivid imagery, intricate symbolism, and obscure references make it a notoriously difficult book to interpret. The goal of this class is to make the book more approachable and understandable.

A solid understanding of the book, according to Dr. Richard Baukham, will “purge and refurbish the Christian imagination.” Dr. Michael J. Gorman encourages us to begin with an understanding that the book is first and foremost “good news about Christ, the Lamb of God—who shares God’s throne and who is the key to the past, present, and future—and therefore also about uncompromising faithfulness leading to undying hope, even in the midst of unrelenting evil and oppressive empire.”

The Scope of This Course

This course will begin with a survey on the various ways to interpret the book: historicist, futurist, preterist, and idealist, followed by a survey of the contents of the book.

Students will undergo a survey of the text.

Two books will be used: (1) The Heart of Revelation: Understanding the 10 Essential Themes of the Bible’s Final Book by J. Scott Duvall and (2) Revelation: Four Views – A Parallel Commentary edited by Steve Gregg.

While not required reading, Reading Revelation Responsibly: Uncivil Worship and Witness Following the Lamb Into the New Creation by Michael J. Gorman is also a recommended resource.

Students will read the biblical text closely, analyze and consider what it meant in its original context while keeping contemporary application questions in view.
