Teacher Profile

Sonya Hemmings

High School and Middle School Teacher

Sonya teaches middle school and high school classes including the National Latin Exam Prep course and U.S. History for middle school through True North Homeschool Academy.

About Sonya

Sonya has been married to her husband, Shawn, for almost 25 years. Together, they have four children, ages 19, 17, 14, and 12. They all (except the oldest child) live in Tempe, Arizona, with their two Labrador retrievers (one yellow, one chocolate).

Sonya loves learning alongside her own children and other students — no matter what the subject. She enjoys reading, cooking, playing the piano, sewing and other crafts.

Homeschool Experience

Sonya has always homeschooled her four children. The oldest is now a sophomore in college in Virginia. The second-oldest will graduate high school in May 2020, leaving one high schooler and one middle schooler at home.

She has taught a wide range of subjects at all grade levels in various homeschooling co-ops ranging in size from just two or three families up to 20 families. She especially loves Latin, literature and composition, and geography, but has been known to enjoy math and chemistry, as well.

She currently serves on the board of a local Stoa-affiliated homeschool speech and debate club in which she and her children have participated for six years. And she has also served as a leader for eight years with her daughter’s American Heritage Girls troop.

Professional Degrees & Experience

Sonya earned a bachelor of science degree in journalism from Northern Arizona University. She worked full time for newspapers, magazines, and book publishers before staying home to homeschool her children. She still does freelance writing and editing for several clients online.
She also served as a long-term substitute teacher at a homeschool enrichment program offered through her local public school district. And this is her fifth year preparing homeschool students to take the National Latin Exam.
